What Is Sugar
Sugar is Scientifically called sucrose. It is found in plants, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and rice. The so-called compound is formed through a scientific process of all photosynthesis. The plant receives sunlight and uses it to convert its own internal elements into sucrose and store it.
For this article when I mention sucrose it also means sugar.
Type Of Sugar
Types of Sugar
- Fructose: found in fruits and honey.
- Galactose: found in milk and dairy products.
- Glucose: found in honey, fruits, and vegetables.
- Lactose: found in milk, made from glucose and galactose.
- Maltose: found in barley.
- Sucrose: made up of glucose and fructose and found in plants.
- Xylose: found in wood or straw.
Where It Come From
Among all plant types, sugar beets and sugar cane have the most quantities of sucrose. That is why they are the first choice used to extract it.
Extracted sucrose is similar to the sweetness of fruit when you eat them. Taking for example the sweetness of the watermelon is due to watermelon sugar. That’s is pure without additive or preservatives. It also means that it is in our pantry, it is added to bread to help it rise and the also present in sweet treats we enjoy in moderation is exactly the same as that’s naturally found in peaches, almonds, sweet peas, and more.
All carbohydrates are made up of one or more molecules of sugars. No matter how complex carbohydrate is to start with, once in the body, all carbohydrates are broken down to these three simple sugars: glucose, fructose, and galactose.
Is It Good Or Bad For your Body?
To have a healthy life, the sugar level must be at the optimum level or at the moderation level. Glucose is the fuels for your body and the level in the body should be between 4.0 – 7.0 mmol/L. Above that level then you are having a health problem called Diabetes.
The Bad is From diabetes which is a type of sickness that will affect your kidney, heart, blood cholesterol level, eye, and another part of your body.
How Much Sugar a Day?
AHA ( American Heart Association ) Recommendation – To keep all of this in perspective, it’s helpful to remember the American Heart Association’s recommendations for sugar intake.
- Men should consume no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams or 150 calories) per day.
- For women, the number is lower: 6 teaspoons (25 grams or 100 calories) per day. Consider that one 12-ounce can of soda contains 8 teaspoons (32 grams) per day! There goes your whole day’s allotment in one slurp.
The good news is that the added-sugar message is breaking through, and many American adults crave a change. In fact, research suggests that 77 percent of Americans are striving for less sugar in their diets. And 7 in 10 consumers are willing to give up a favorite sugary product in favor of finding a healthier alternative. The willingness is there. For now, your best defense is education.
